Tottenham Closing In On Deal to Sign Barcelona Winger Ibrahim Afellay

Spurs closing on Barca star.

A source told Metro that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and manager Andre Villas-Boas spoke to the Dutch forward on Wednesday to convince him his future lies in north London.

The 26-year-old, who has previously interested Arsenal and Liverpool in the Premier League, has been told by new Barca coach Tito Vilanova he is unlikely to get much first-team football in the new season.

Spurs are in the middle of a transfer revolution after being forced to wait until Luka Modric completed his move to Real Madrid before splashing the cash.

Belgian attacker Moussa Dembele has joined from Fulham, adding to the prior signings of Jan Vertonghen, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Emmanuel Adebayor.

Villas-Boas intends for Afellay to provide competition for Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon in the wide positions of a front three.

Tottenham seem to be doing a Chelsea: namely trying to sign every attacking player under the sun.

It’s common knowledge that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy absolutely loves the week before the transfer deadline but since Wednesday night and Thursday morning, it has emerged that Spurs are closing in on Loic Remy, Joao Moutinho and Ibrahim Afellay.

If Spurs can land two of the three, and bring in goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, sceptics who wrote off Andre Villas-Boas and his side may be forced to think again.

The north Londoners have sold Luka Modric but they’ve already replaced some that lost creativity by landing high-rated Belgian Moussa Dembele.

With Afellay providing competition for Bale and Lennon on the wings and Moutinho slotting in alongside Dembele and Sandro, Spurs are going to have some team this season if Levy can pull the deals off.

That said, the Lilywhites still look short up front. Last season they managed to keep Emmanuel Adebayor fit for the entire campaign but an injury this term to the big Togolese striker would leave Jermain Defoe to lead the line and the England man is unsuited to playing the lone striker role.

Presumably that’s why Levy and Villas-Boas are also chasing Remy, while it is rumoured that Rafa van der Vaart could be sold to finance all this activity. Expect a crazy 48 hours at White Hart Lane; there are going to be some twists along the way.
