Arsenal Miss Out On Dutch Star, As PSG Close In On £4.5m Gregory Van Der Wiel Deal

Defender to leave Ajax for Paris giants.

Paris Saint-Germain are set to complete £4.5m deal for Arsenal target Gregory van der Wiel.

The Ajax right-back, who has 35 caps for Holland, will link-up with fellow new-boys Zlatan Ibrahimovich, Lucas Moura and Thiago Silva at the big-spending French club.

French football expert Matt Spiro is quoted as saying by the BBC: “No surprise here: big-spending Paris Saint-Germain are set to clinch today’s first major signing in France after agreeing terms with Ajax right-back Gregory van der Wiel. The Dutch international is on his way to the French capital to sign a four-year deal.”

The 24-year-old will have to compete with captain Christophe Jallet for a place in the first-team and his signing will see PSG’s summer transfer spending surpass £114m.

The news will come as a blow to Arsenal, who hoped to bring the Dutchman to North London as cover for the injured Bakary Sagna.

Van der Wiel began his career at Ajax, making 184 appearances.
