Southampton In For Italian Legend Alessandro Del Piero, After Sydney Switch Collapses

Saints could be set for shock post-deadline move for Italian.

Southampton are hoping to complete a stunning post-deadline day deal to bring Alessandro Del Piero to St Mary’s, reports Setanta.

The 37-year-old Italian is a free agent after leaving Juventus in May, following nineteen seasons with the Old Lady.

The cultured left-footer had looked set for a move to Australia with Sydney FC but the switch broke down on Friday and Saints are now preparing to swoop for the veteran forward.

Boss Nigel Adkins has already seen his attacking options significantly bolstered this summer, with the signings of Jay Rodriguez from Burnley, Emmanuel Mayuka from Young Boys and Bologna’s Gaston Ramirez at an outlay of more than £28m.

But Adkins believes Del Piero still has plenty to offer at the highest level and believes his winning mentality could be a significant factor in helping the south coast outfit survive the drop.

Southampton will face competition for the Italian’s signature from Celtic, Portuguese side Braga and Swiss outfit Sion.
