DONE DEALS: Zenit Complete £64m Deal to Sign Hulk & Axel Witsel: Russian Big Spenders Land FC Porto & Benfica Stars

Portuguese based duo on their way to Russia.

Zenit St Petersburg spend £64m to sign Hulk and Witsel

Brazil striker Hulk, who had talks with Chelsea in May, has joined Zenit St Petersburg from Porto in a transfer deal worth £32m.

The 26-year-old has signed a five-year deal with the Russian champions, who are managed by Luciano Spalletti.
Zenit have also completed the signing, again on a five-year contract and for a similar transfer fee, of midfielder Axel Witsel, 23, from Benfica.

Witsel, capped 30 times by Belgium, began his career at Standard Liege.

Having won the Russian Premier League last term it appears that Zenit St Petersburg are keen on pushing for continental honours and have won the race to sign two much sought after footballing properties.

With the English Premier League transfer window slammed shut Zenit had time to pick off the two targets who had failed to secure moves from their respective Portuguese clubs.

Hulk had been linked with a myriad of sides after two stellar seasons at FC Porto, during which the 26 year old Brazilian international had won back to back domestic titles and a Europa League crown, scoring 56 goals in the process.

Axel Witsel had a ground-breaking first season in Portugal with Benfica having moved from his native Belgium a year ago. The Belgian international midfielder had been the subject of interest from a number of Premier League sides but has opted for a money spinning move to St Petersburg.

Zenit may well not prove a match for many of their potential Champions League opposition. Luciano Spalletti’s side face Malaga, AC Milan and Anderlecht in their group matches in the tournament.
