France boss fears Lloris may suffer from lack of first-team football at new club Tottenham.
The France captain made a transfer deadline day switch from Lyon to Tottenham as part of Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s late spending spree at White Hart Lane.
But Friedel produced an impressive display against Norwich on Saturday that brought praise from his manager Andre Villas-Boas – and a warning for Lloris.
“When you transfer it’s not written in the contract that you have to play,” said Villas-Boas.
“He has to compete against three good goalkeepers and at the moment Brad is doing extremely well. He deserves to be playing and he’ll continue to do so.”
Those remarks have had reverberations across the Channel with Deschamps curious as to the future role at Spurs for the France No 1.
Although the newly-appointed boss of Les Bleus does not want to create a problem from nothing, he admits it could soon be something he needs to think about.

Spurs boss AVB’s comments following his team’s 1-1 draw with Norwich over the weekend may well be a cause for concern in France. They have led to French national team boss Deschamps to fear Lloris may fail to nail down a first-team spot at White Hart Lane this season and the former Chelsea midfielder worries the custodian’s form will suffer as a consequence.
Lloris arrives at Spurs with a reputation as one of the best ‘keepers in the world, and the 25-year-old France captain, and Deschamps, could be forgiven for assuming he would walk straight into a starting spot in the Spurs team after arriving in north London for £11m on transfer deadline day.
Yet veteran American shot-stopper Brad Friedel has arguably been Spurs’ best player so far this season, as a slow start under AVB has seen them pick up just two points in their opening three games. The American pulled off a string of quality saves against Norwich which kept his side in the game. The 41-year-old may well be in his final season in the top flight but he will by no means willingly give up his spot for the Frenchman; as his record of 307 consecutive Premier League appearances testifies.
With the Premier League currently on hold as the international break arrives Lloris will be hopeful that a couple of top quality displays for his national side will be enough to persuade the Spurs coach that he merits the no.1 jersey, and Deschamps will look on with interest, and perhaps a certain amount of consternation, at the situation in the coming weeks.
