The 29-year-old has admitted that he had heart set on a move back to Hamburg after he spent three successful years in the city where his wife still works.
And, according to German newspaper Bild, van der Vaart took a huge cut in wages, believed to add up to £3m per year, in order to make the move.
“Money is not so important to me, it does not play the major role. My heart was set on HSV and I really wanted to be here,” the Dutchman is quoted as saying.
The cultured left-footer also said that he does not want to leave Hamburg again, even when he stops playing.
Van der Vaart spend two seasons with Spurs during, which he made over 60 league appearances for the club, scoring 25 times.
