Liverpool Offered Trio In Swap Deals In Desperate Pursuit of Fresh Attacking Option

Anfield side failed to land much needed forward, much to Brendan Rodgers chagrin.

Brendan Rodgers’ determination to land Clint Dempsey has been laid bare after it was revealed he attempted to broker the deal by offering several Liverpool stars in exchange.

Rodgers had agreed a swap in principle with Fulham for Jordan Henderson but it now appears that Stewart Downing and Jose Enrique were also mentioned as possible departures.

This goes some way to showing just how desperate Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was to bring in Fulham forward Clint Dempsey.

The problem was that Fulham wanted cold hard cash and it seems that Anfield board was not willing to pay a very reasonable sum of £6m for the prolific American, a decision that certainly shook Rodgers and the Northern Irishman did well to not overplay his disappointment in the public spotlight but he clearly would never have sent Andy Carroll out on loan to West Ham had he known that no deadline-day deal was forthcoming.

Given that Martin Jol had seemingly already outlined a replacement for Dempsey in the form of Man United forward Dimitar Berbatov it seems sensible that the West London side were merely looking for a fair cash price for the 29 year old Texan. Tottenham paid the £6m on deadline-day, a very fair price for a player who netted 23 goals last term, even if the attacker did only have a year left on his contract.

The additions of Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson as possible players to use in a swap deal are perhaps not surprising but the option to use Spaniard Jose Enrique is a tad surprising given that the former Newcastle United man had a very solid first season at the Merseyside club.
