Swiss star still has future in north London, insists Wenger.
Arsene Wenger has offered Arsenal fringe player Yohan Djourou a lifeline, claiming he refused to allow the Swiss defender to leave the club this summer.
Djourou is behind fellow centre-halves Thomas Vermaelen, Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny is the pecking order at the Emirates and expressed his unhappiness at the situation in July.
His remarks led to speculation that Djorou, who has not started a game for the Gunners since April, would leave north London in the summer but Wenger has insisted that the Switzerland international remains part of his plans.
In an interview with daily German newspaper Blick, Wenger said: “I didn’t let Djourou leave as I love him as a player and he loves the club.
“Johan is next to Vermaelen, Mertesacker and Koscielny one of four central defenders. All four are international-level players and therefore, the fight for a regular place is intense.
“He has been training very well in recent weeks. Djourou is ready when I need him.”
Djourou has stated in the past that he is not happy with being played out of position at full-back and Wenger has so far preferred youngster Carl Jenkinson in the absence of the injured right-back Bacary Sagna.
