Liverpool Linked With £23.9m Dutch International Goal Machine: Anfield Side May Shelve Interest In Sporting Lisbon Striker

Anfield side continue to be linked with long term target.

Liverpool could shelve their interest in free-scoring Dutchman Ricky van Wolfswinkel after the player’s agent confirmed the striker’s intention to extend his stay at Sporting Lisbon.

Louis Laros, Van Wolfswinkel’s representative, has revealed that plans are in place to renegotiate his client’s contract at Sporting later this month.

“Sporting wants to renew and Ricky is happy. Everyone is willing to talk,” Laros is quoted as saying in Portuguese newspaper Record.

Van Wolfswinkel, 23, is keen to increase his salary in recognition of his stellar debut campaign in Portugal, where he scored 25 goals.

Sporting, too, are anxious to extend the length of his contract by one or two years – his current deal expires in 2016 – and they will up his minimum fee release clause to €30m in order to fend off interest from several English clubs, most notably Liverpool.

Liverpool have long been linked with Dutch striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel, indeed their interest pre-dates the striker’s move to Sporting Lisbon, but it appears that the player’s agent is keen to get his client a new improved contract to stay at his Portuguese club.

Indeed Mr Laros may well use interest from the Anfield side to drive a better deal for Wolfswinkel but one would have imagined that his excellent form would be enough to encourage Sporting Lisbon to meet his demands.

The 23 year old netted 25 goals in his debut season at the Estadio Jose Alvalade and has already struck twice during the current campaign however he has failed to add to the one national team cap he secured back in August 2010. The former Utrecht man may feel that a high-profile move to Merseyside could help him force his way into Louis van Gaal’s set-up.

Brendan Rodgers could well do with alternative attacking options having been left with just two recognised senior strikers in Luis Suarez and new boy Fabio Borini, but Liverpool’s owners may be reticent about meeting Sporting Lisbon’s release clause.
