Tottenham Linked With Move for Arsenal Winger Andrei Arshavin

White Hart Lane side considering January bid for Emirates Stadium back-up man after selling Rafael Van der Vaart and failing to land Moutinho.

Tottenham are lining up a move for Russia captain and Arsenal attacker Andrei Arshavin, with the player having fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal and eager for first-team football and a fresh start in England.

The player fell out of favour last season and ended up joining former club Zenit St. Petersburg in February for the remainder of the campaign, with an eye on keeping his place in the Russian team for Euro 2012 in the summer.

He joined Spurs’ north London rivals Arsenal in February 2009 in what remains the club’s second-highest transfer fee – £15m – after he had looked set to move to White Hart Lane the previous summer only for talks to break down between Spurs and Zenit.

In his first two-and-a-half seasons with the Gunners the Russian produced some scintillating performances, most notably scoring all 4 goals in a 4-4 tie against Liverpool at Anfield in 2009.

However, at the beginning of last season his performances began to be heavily criticised by the Arsenal faithful for his lack of effort in tracking back to help out his defence. This saw him lose his place in the side and eventually make the loan move to Zenit for regular first-team football.

Having missed out on signing the player back in 2008, and with space for another quality attacker in the squad after Van Der Vaart’s departure was not followed by the arrival of Moutinho, as the move failed to materialise, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy sees Arshavin’s present situation as an ideal opportunity to once again move for the player.

Levy feels that new-boss Andre Villas-Boas could incorporate the Russian into his formation at Spurs in the supporting striker role in front of new-arrival Mousa Dembele and get him back to the blistering form he showed, which had him linked with Barcelona, before he joined Arsenal.
