West Ham Target Former Arsenal & Man United Defender as Sam Allardyce Considers Free Agent Spree

Upton Park boss keen on defensive reinforcement.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce is running the rule over three free agents as he looks to bolster his defensive options outside the transfer window.

Former Portsmouth right-back-cum-midfielder Anthony Vanden Borre, 24, heads the list of trialists at the Hammers, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Belgian is joined at the club by former Manchester United and Arsenal veteran Mikael Silvestre as well as ex-Sunderland centre-back John Mensah.

Sam Allardyce did some very good business during the summer transfer window but appears keen to bring in further additions to add strength in depth to his Upton Park squad.

Chief among the trio of free agents targets would appear to be former Man United and Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre who spent two average seasons at the Emirates Stadium after a successful nine years at Old Trafford. The former French international has spent the last two years at Werder Bremen but is now without a club and could well be a handy player to have on the Hammers books.

The 35 year old won five Premier League titles with Man United and is an adaptable talent who could still have a season in the tank.

West Ham have stared the current campaign well, notching up two wins from three matches thus far.
