Arsenal & Man City Set Sights On Barcelona Youngster Dubbed The ‘New Xavi’

Emirates and Etihad Stadium sides keen on Nou Camp starlet.

Remember the name Sergi Samper because chances are you will hearing about him a lot in the future.

Comparisons with Barcelona pass master Xavi may be premature but the central midfielder, 17, looks the real deal and was the stand-out performer in Thursday night’s NextGen Series clash at White Hart Lane.

Arsenal and Manchester City have their eyes on Samper – but on Thursday’s showing Barca will have no intention of parting with their wonderkid.

Well that would make a change wouldn’t it. Barcelona have of course nabbed a fair few Arsenal players in the recent past and whilst Arsene Wenger did have hold of Cesc Fabregas for a few years it does seem that the overall it’s the Catalan side that has done best out of the two clubs.

No doubt there would have been scouts aplenty on show during Barcelona’s NextGen encounter with Tottenham last night, during which 17 year old Sergi Samper put on a real show of midfield magic.

The talented midfielder is incredibly comfortable on the ball and has good vision and rarely loses possession and is in many ways therefore very much a ‘Wenger-style’ player but one wonders just how likely Barcelona are to allow the starlet to pursue his career anywhere other than at the Nou Camp.

Though Arsenal have a fair few talented midfielders coming through their ranks Wenger appears to be a big admirer of the Spanish Under 17 international.

Though talented, Samper may well feel he could struggle to break into the Barcelona first team picture, indeed though the youngster is dubbed the ‘Next Xavi’ all signs are pointing to former Gunners skipper Cesc Fabregas as a likely long term replacement for the Spanish international veteran.

Man City appear keen to pursue a more youthful approach to squad building and having unveiled plans for a new £200m training and academy complex Roberto Mancini may well be looking to spend smaller sums in the transfer market and could well be less likely to look to established stars to make up his first team squad.

Therefore a move for the Barcelona youngster fits in with a new approach to build for the future. No doubt a number of other sides will be keen on the teenager in the coming months, especially if he pulls off more quality performances during the NextGen Series.
