Liverpool & Tottenham Linked With Move for £16m ‘New Xabi Alonso’

Anfield and White Hart Lane sides keen on Athletic Bilbao midfielder.

Spanish source AS reports that Liverpool and Tottenham are both keen on Athletic Bilbao Ander Herrera, claiming both sides are willing to fork out up to €20m (£16m) for the highly rated 23 year old who was part of Spain’s Olympic side that failed to make an impact in London 2012.

The talented young midfielder has been likened to Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso and appears to have attracted the attention of both Andre Villas-Boas and Brendan Rodgers, two manager’s known for their penchant for players who are comfortable on the ball and intelligent distributors of the ball, Herrera fits that bill on both counts.

The local born former Spanish Under 21 international moved to Athletic Bilbao last summer and notched up 54 appearances in all competitions in his debut season at the club, helping the Basque side to the Europa League final.

Bilbao will be reticent to lose another of their big names having cashed in on Javi Martinez’s sale to Bayern Munich. However the San Mames side already faces the prospect of losing giant forward Fernando Llorente as he has entered the final year of his deal and Marcelo Bielsa may be fighting a losing battle if either of these Premier League giants comes calling for Herrera.

Liverpool boss Rodgers brought in Joe Allen from former club Swansea City but could well be keen on bringing in further options given that he offloaded a number of midfield and wide options over the summer with the likes of Alberto Aquilani, Charlie Adam, Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodriguez all saying farewell to Anfield. With Steven Gerrard clearly moving towards the latter period of his career and Nuri Sahin only being signed on a temporary basis a move for Herrera may well be a wise one.

Tottenham have brought in a number of new additions to their squad this summer but did lose hugely influential midfield pair Luka Modric and Rafael Van der Vaart so any interest Andre Villas-Boas has in the former Real Zaragoza man may be better judged in January when the White Hart Lane side will have seen what new signings Moussa Dembele and Gylfi Sigurdsson are capable of and indeed just how Scott Parker is faring following his injury lay-off.
