Moyes admits he was ‘close’ to Ba deal.
Everton boss David Moyes has admitted he was ‘close’ to signing Newcastle striker Demba Ba last season.
Ba left relegated West Ham to join the Toon last summer and scored 16 goals in his first full season at St James’ Park.
Stoke were reportedly on the verge of signing the Senagalese striker but pulled out of a deal over concerns about a long-standing knee injury, while then-Birmingham boss Alex McLeish admitted that he was looking at Ba before he moved north.
Ahead of Newcastle’s trip to Goodison Park, Toffees boss Moyes said: “He was close to coming here. He was somebody I was really interested in and for different reasons it just didn’t come off.
“I have had plenty of ‘what-might-have- beens’, don’t worry about that. We needed a centre-forward and we were struggling for goalscorers. We couldn’t get that formula to get us goals,” the Scot is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.
Speaking about the threat from the Toon, Moyes said: “Newcastle have very much the same side they had last season when they were great. I think a lot of people thought they would fade away but they didn’t, they kept going all year. Alan Pardew and Newcastle did a really good job and deservedly find themselves in Europe this year.
“They’ve brought in a few – Vurnon Anita and a few others have come into the squad. They had a good team last year, so it might have been hard to better that.
“With Cheik Tiote, Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa they’ve got a group of players who are very talented and to improve on that would be very difficult and probably very costly as well.”
