St James’ Park boss believes striker is vulnerable to sale.
Demba Ba: Alan Pardew admits striker could leave in January
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has admitted last season’s top scorer Demba Ba could leave the club for £7m in January.
The 27-year-old Senegal striker is believed to be frustrated at his current role at the club and talks over a new contract have reached an impasse.
It was thought Ba’s £7m buy-out clause expired on 31 July, but Pardew revealed it is still active in the new year.
“There is that clause in his contract and it makes us vulnerable, ” he said. “It’s still open in the next window.”

One wonders why Alan Pardew would publicly state that Demba Ba’s £7m release clause was still active. Most had assumed that the clause expired at the end of July and for the Magpies boss to state this to be the contrary could be considered an attempt to look for a buyer for the Senegal international or to make a point of stating his dissatisfaction at the situation and his hope that a new deal could be agreed so as to end the level of uncertainty about the 27 year old’s future.
According to Ba’s agent the former West Ham and Hoffenheim man is unhappy about the role he has played at the club following the arrival of national team compatriot Papiss Cisse. This has seen the prolific marksman forced into a wide attacking role that led to the striker netting only one goal in the final 15 matches of last term, having scored at will prior to the January signing.
There are bound to be many interested parties keen to land Demba Ba, especially at such a price and it would appear sensible that if Alan Pardew wants the situation to be resolved a new deal would have to be signed by the striker and perhaps the benching of the forward was his way of telling the players (and his agent) that the current situation could not continue indefinitely.
