Scottish midfielder hoping to impress Black Cats boss in trial.
Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill is looking at signing former Everton midfielder James McFadden after taking him on trial for the week.
The Scotland international is a free-agent after leaving Everton at the end of his contract in the summer and O’Neill is assessing whether he still has what it takes to perform in the top flight and add something to his Sunderland team.
McFadden spent last season at Everton after he had been released from previous club Birmingham, having missed most of the 2010-11 season with a serious knee injury.
It was his second spell at Everton, having played for the Toffees between 2003-08, but he managed just 7 appearances during the season as a lack of fitness due to injuries continued to hang over him.
O’Neill is believed to be weighing up making the player a short-term offer.
McFadden has made 48 appearances for Scotland, contributing 15 goals since 2002.
