Anfield side ready to offer two year deal to Besiktas wide-man.
Liverpool offer Ricardo Quaresma second chance in Premier League
The 28-year-old Portuguese winger has less than 12 months left to run on his current deal with Besiktas.
Quaresma is currently training with the club’s youth team after an ugly spat with chairman Fikret Orman last week, in which Orman told the player he would ‘finish his career’ during a row over the winger’s refusal to pen a contract extension.
The indiscipline has not put off Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers though, who tried to rescue the Sporting Libson product from his Turkish nightmare during the summer, only to baulk at Besiktas’s £7 million asking price.
However, with Quaresma refusing to sign on after rejecting their latest contract offer over the weekend, Rodgers is ready to open talks over a pre-contract agreement in January.
The Reds could offer the winger attractive terms on a two-year-deal, with no transfer fee meaning they could match his current £80,000-a-week wages in Turkey.
Ricardo Quaresma is very much a ‘nearly-man’, a player with obvious ability who has consistently fluffed his chance of making it in ‘the big-time’, a move to Liverpool may be the Portuguese winger’s chance to finally make the grade. The 28 year old is a long term Anfield target and January may well be the time a move to Merseyside finally comes off.
Liverpool could well do with a direct running wide-man to help feed the club’s threadbare attack. Youngster Raheem Sterling has fairly burst onto the scene this term but the likes of Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson have failed to make an impact and there is certainly room for a player such as Quaresma in Brendan Rodgers’ squad.
Quaresma failed to impress at both Barcelona and Inter Milan but was certainly a consistent force during a four year spell at FC Porto that was sandwiched by his moves to the European giants.
If Besiktas were hoping for £7m in the summer they will surely have to settle for a decent chunk less when the transfer window re-opens and any fee lower than that previously demanded by the Turkish side is certainly worth Liverpool paying up in order to sign the Portuguese international.
