St James’ Park side keen on CSKA Moscow man.
Newcastle are locked in a three-way battle with Italian giants Napoli and Lazio to sign Seydou Doumbia – and they could be forced to fork out £16m to land the Ivory Coast hitman.
His scintillating form in Switzerland led to a Russian move, and he has continued his remarkable goalscoring exploits in Moscow – he notched 26 goals last term.
The forward, who has been capped 10 times by the Ivory Coast, has been watched by Newcastle scouts during CSKA’s last three games.
Does Alan Pardew need another striking option? Clearly any possible push to bring in a new forward to St James’ Park would only be relevant if the Newcastle United boss was forced to sell Senegal international Demba Ba.
There has been a lot of speculation about the future of the 27 year old striker after his agent publicly stated the player’s unhappiness at being played in a wide attacking role and that argument led to the former West Ham man being consigned to the subs bench for Newcastle United’s match against Everton. Demba Ba duly came on and scored twice and then followed that with the winner against Norwch City on the weekend.
Pardew then decided to tell the world that Ba’s £7m release clause was very much active, many having believed that it had ceased to be an issue last month, so clearly there are problems between the club and one of their prized assets.
Therefore it’s no big surprise to see the North-East side linked with a move for a possible replacement, however it’s very unlikely that Mike Ashley will hand Pardew the funds to make a £16m move for Seydou Doumbia.
Though the Ivory Coast man has been in prolific form in Russia, 34 goals in 54 league appearances, it’s hard to judge the player’s ability to make it at a higher level. The 24 year old also scored goals for fun in Switzerland but a price tag of that magnitude is unlikely to be met by any side in the English top tier.
