TuttoMercato report that Liverpool are showing real interest in adaptable Udinese defender Mehdi Benatia.

The 25 year old French born Moroccan international has had two solid seasons in Serie A since moving to the Stadio Fruili from French side Clermont and is now on the Anfield radar as Brendan Rodgers looks at inexpensive ways to beef up his Liverpool defence.

Rodgers has not been handed the type of transfer budget Liverpool’s American owners lavished on Kenny Dalglish and has thus had to be a little more intelligent in his scouting plans and identifying Benatia as a potential new signing if a wise and cost-effective plan to adopt.

Benatia can play across the defence, both as a full-back but more commonly as a central defender, and given the relative lack of strength in depth at Liverpool the Udinese man could be an ideal signing.

Rodgers has also seen Daniel Agger once again ruled out with injury and with youngster Martin Kelly also sidelined it may become increasingly clear that such a signing should be considered.

Mehdi Benatia has helped his side to back to back top four finishes in Serie A and could perhaps help Liverpool to a similar achievement.
