Arsenal continue to track progress of defensive target Aleksandar Dragovic

Arsenal have joined a burgeoning list of European clubs in expressing an interest in FC Basel star Aleksandar Dragovic.

The 21-year-old centre back is widely considered one of the best talents to emerge from Austrian football in recent years, having successfully graduated from the Austria Vienna academy before joining Basel in February of last year.

A tall, composed and technically excellent defender, Dragovic has been scouted by a whole host of leading clubs in recent months, including Inter Milan, Roma, Fiorentina, Borussia Dortmund, Werder Bremen, Stuttgart and French side Marseille, while Norwich City are believed to have failed with a £2 million bid over the summer.

Though Arsenal have three very able centre backs in Thomas Vermaelen, Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, arguably the cover from that point onwards is a little shaky with big Swiss defender Johan Djourou, though very determined and hard-working, being of questionable talent

If Wenger was to experience a defensive injury crisis similar to that which affected his full-backs last term then the North London club could struggle to cope, hence the need to consider moves for back up options.

FC Basel youngster Aleksandar Dragovic has been strongly linked with a move away from the Swiss champions and would clearly jump at the chance of a move to the Emirates Stadium.

The former Austria Vienna centre-back has helped Basel to back to back domestic titles in his two seasons at the club and is a regular in the Austrian national team set-up.
