Aston Villa striker Darren Bent is ready to demand a January exit from the club, with Liverpool leading the race for his signature.

Bent was unhappy about being left on the bench for Sunday’s Midlands derby with West Brom and is worried that he is set to be marginalised at Villa Park.

The 28-year-old emerged from the bench to rescue a point for the Villains late on but it is understood that he feels aggrieved at being dropped in favour of Gabriel Agbonlahor and Christian Benteke after his goal-scoring display against Southampton last week.

Liverpool are ready to swoop if Bent cannot reconcile his differences with boss Paul Lambert and it is thought the Anfield club’s US owners are ready to hand manager Brendan Rodgers a £20m kitty to secure the England man’s signature.

Bent is widely regarded as one of the most lethal finishers in the Premier League and will have plenty of suitors if he decides to leave Villa Park.

The former Ipswich Town, Charlton and Tottenham striker arrived in the midlands from Sunderland in January 2011 for £22m and has scored 20 league goals in 44 appearances.

It is understood that Lambert is ready to offer Bent assurances that he is a key part of his plans this season but it may not be enough to keep the striker who is also determined to play regular international and Champions League football before he retires.
