Italian source TuttoMercatoWeb state that Arsenal are lining up a January move for impressive Udinese defender Mehdi Benatia.

The 25 year old French born Moroccan international has had two solid seasons in Serie A since moving to the Stadio Fruili from French side Clermont and is now on seemingly a target who has appeared on Arsene Wenger’s radar.

Benatia can play across the defence, both as a full-back but more commonly as a central defender, and could be of possible use to the North London club in a number of areas and to help build strength in depth in the Gunners squad.

Though Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker offer three very able central defensive options beyond this trio Wenger does not have a great deal to call upon and with Arsenal battling on multiple fronts it could be very useful to bring in another option in this area.

Last term Wenger’s squad suffered a major injury crisis in his full-back departments with Andre Santos, Bacary Sagna, Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson all suffering with injuries during the last campaign. Therefore Benatia could help in this area also.

Mehdi Benatia has helped his side to back to back top four finishes in Serie A in his two terms at Udinese.
