Black Cats close to deal for Scot.
Sunderland are closing in on the signing of former Everton striker James McFadden after the Scot had a successful trial at the Stadium of Light.
McFadden, 29, is a free agent after being released by Everton during the summer and watched from the stands as Sunderland beat Wigan over the weekend.
“We’ll see how it goes but he has done well and we’ll talk,” Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill told the Shields Gazette.
The former Scotland international, who is equally comfortable in defence of midfield, spent five years at Goodison Park until 2008, when he joined Birmingham.
McFadden impressed during his spell in the midlands but suffered a serious knee injury in August 2010, which sidelined him for 13 months.
He returned to Everton last summer but made just eight first team appearances for David Moyes’ side and was let go in June.
O’Neill has previously admitted that he is attracted by the idea of adding a number of free agents to his Sunderland squad and is likely to offer McFadden a one-year deal.
