Anfield side want Schalke hit-man.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar looks almost certain to be leaving Schalke at the end of the season, if general manager Horst Heldt is to be believed.
The Dutch striker boasts an impressive scoring record of 65 goals in 89 games for Schalke, and would be an excellent acquisition for any team. Huntelaar was reportedly tracked by Liverpool last season and given the Red’s desperation for a decent out-and-out striker, a January move cannot be ruled out.
Whilst Liverpool are now more geared to youthful additions the fact that Brendan Rodgers squad is threadbare with attacking options and the need for the Merseyside club to push for a top four finish may well push them towards considering a bid for the 29 year old Schalke forward.
The fact that the Dutch international could be purchase ‘on the cheap’ due to being in the final year of his contract may also be a factor that works in Liverpool’s favour as it appears Rodgers will not be handed the kind of sums his predecessor was given for new additions.
Currently Liverpool have just two recognised senior strikers, Luis Suarez and Fabio Borini, and though the likes of Adam Morgan and Samed Yesil are knocking on the door, the club sorely need proven striking options to call upon.
Huntelaar may well be tempted by a move to the Premier League having completed high profile moves to La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga in a career that has hit an individual high in Gelsenkirchen.
The former Ajax, Real Madrid and AC Milan man netted an astonishing 48 goals in 47 matches in all competitions last season and already has four goals in seven matches this term but may well be suffering from the loss of Raul, who was his foil for two seasons at Schalke, and therefore could be all the more willing to consider offers of a new challenge.
