Check-In to Man United v Newcastle United

Telegraph Sport has learnt that Dortmund were made aware of United’s interest in Lewandowski, 24, in August, prior to Robin van Persie’s £22million transfer from Arsenal to Old Trafford, and that the German club rejected the possibility of a deal in the region of €20million (£16million).

Lewandowski has made it clear to Dortmund, however, that he will not sign an extension to his contract at the club, which expires in June 2014, and there is an acceptance in Germany that he will be sold at the end of this season.

United capitalised on Shinji Kagawa’s diminishing contract at Dortmund this summer by striking a £17million deal for the Japanese midfielder, whose deal had entered its final 12 months.

And with Dortmund adopting a business model which prevents them paying excessive wages, cashing in on Lewandowski next summer rather than lose him as a free agent in 2014, is the preferred option.

United have emerged as front-runners to sign the Pole.

Given that Man United have a wealth of strikers of varying ages and levels of experience once does wonder why Sir Alex Ferguson would have to consider once again pursuing Robert Lewandowski. This is not to say that the Polish international isn’t a quality player but the Scot already has Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez to call upon so where would the Borussia Dortmund man fit into the first team picture?

Ferguson was linked with interest in the 24 year old Warsaw born forward during the Euro 2012 finals but since then has acquired Van Persie and given that the other aforementioned three options are all aged 26 years of age or under, there seems less or an urgent need to beef up numbers.

Lewandowski has been a consistent striking force over the past 18 months, netting 30 goals in all competitions last term and no doubt the big powerful forward would be keen to join former team-mate Shinji Kagawa at Old Trafford and Jurgen Klopp appears to have his work cut out trying to get the forward to sign a new deal.

Expect other suitors to register their interest as the January transfer window approaches, especially if Bayern Munich continue their terrific run of Bundesliga form.
