European giants want Old Trafford centre-back.
Italian source CalcioMercato report that Barcelona and Juventus are lining up a bid for Man United defender Nemanja Vidic. The Serbian international has been a mainstay of the Old Trafford defence since signing for the Premier League side in the summer of 2006.
Sir Alex Ferguson is unlikely to entertain offers for the 30 year old, especially given the poor form shown by Vidic’s traditional centre back partner Rio Ferdinand, and it’s unclear whether the former Spartak Moscow man may be tempted by a new challenge in Spain or Italy.
Though Man United already appear to have the next generation of defensive talent already at the club in the form Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, Ferguson has seen both players struggle with injuries. Northern Irish international Jonny Evans is arguably still to prove his ability on a consistent basis.
Of the two clubs chasing Vidic, Barcelona are certainly the most in need of a centre back signing. Tito Vilanova has had to use makeshift replacements when Carles Puyol or Gerard Pique have been sidelined, with the likes of Javier Mascherano and Alex Song on hand to fill-in, hence the Catalan side’s need to beef up the back-line.
