MANCHESTER UNITED hope that offloading Javier Hernandez to Real Madrid will tempt the Spanish champions into letting go of some of their stars.

United have previously been linked with defenders Raul Albiol and Raphael Varane, with the Premier League side also closely monitoring Sergio Ramos’s current troubles with Mourinho.

Sir Alex Ferguson could certainly do with able defensive options given the injury crisis his Old Trafford squad is fully immersed in. The Man United boss has seen a number of his first team ruled out of action and has had to use makeshift solutions to resolve the crisis, at times calling upon Michael Carrick to fill a centre-back berth.

Though Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have time on their side both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand’s injury issues have been recurring over the past few seasons and Ferguson is no doubt keen to bring in a player or two that can fill their spots in the long term.

Of the three players mentioned clearly Sergio Ramos is of the highest quality and talk of a rift developing between the Spanish international and Jose Mourinho could help in the pursuit of the experienced 26 year old.

The former Sevilla man can play at full-back and in the centre of defence and has made over 350 top tier appearances and has 95 caps to his name and has of course secured two time European Championship wins as well as a World Cup triumph to add to his very impressive CV.

Should Ferguson opt for a more youthful option then Raphael Varane could be the player to turn to. The former Lens player has looked sound when called upon but as yet has not had a huge part to play in Mourinho’s first team, however the Real Madrid boss may well look to hold onto the French Under 21 international as he clearly has long term potential.

Raul Albiol’s Real Madrid career has never really got going and this may well be due to the fact that he arrived prior to Mourinho being installed as manager and the former Valencia man could well have to leave the Spanish giants in order to prevent his career from stagnating.
