Chelsea Given Fresh Hope In South American Striker Chase

Stamford Bridge side keen on Benfica hit-man.

Check-In to Barcelona v Real Madrid

Chelsea and Everton have been handed a transfer boost following reports that Benfica forward Oscar Cardozo has yet to agree a new deal with the Portuguese club.

As reported by talkSPORT last month, the Paraguayan, whose deal at the Stadium of Light expires in 2014, was set to sign a new contract but talks appear to have stalled over the forward’s demands.

He is believed to have requested a significant pay rise to extend his stay in Portugal, and club officials are negotiating with his agent.

Chelsea have been linked with a myriad of possible striker signings and this isn’t the first time the West London side have apparently been tracking Benfica forward Oscar Cardozo but it would be a fairly big surprise if the Blues did put in a bid for the Paraguayan.

The ethos at Stamford Bridge certainly appears to have shifted to a drive to convert the Chelsea squad into a more youthful one, hence the £80m+ outlay on six players over the summer all of whom were aged 23 or under, so it’s hard to see where the giant 29 year old fits into that plan.

Interest in a player of the same age, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar would at least make sense in that Chelsea can pick up the Schalke man ‘on the cheap’ due to the Dutchman being in the final year of his contract, however the valuation placed on Cardozo is far far higher.

The 6ft 4in forward has been a big success in Lisbon netting 132 goals in 219 appearances for Benfica but there may be questions over whether Cardozo would be quite as successful in a higher quality league.
