Italian source CalcioMercato claim that Liverpool have been scouting young Italian international centre-back Angelo Ogbonna as Brendan Rodgers looks at possible additions to his Anfield defence.

24 year old Torino centre back Ogbonna may have spent the last three seasons in Serie B but that hasn’t prevented him from forcing his way into the Italian national team set-up and he was instrumental in helping his side back into the top tier.

Ogbonna played in Italy’s recent draw with Bulgaria in last month’s World Cup qualifiers and is considered one of the most solid defensive customers in Serie A.

Rodgers has watched his side conceded 12 goals in their opening seven Premier League matches and may feel that reinforcements are needed at the back. Martin Skrtel is recognised as one of the most solid defenders in the English top tier and whilst his usual partner Daniel Agger is also a quality proposition he is also injury prone. Jamie Carragher is clearly in the final throes of his career and youngster Sebastian Coates is probably not ready for regular Premier League action.

The emergence of Andre Wisdom as an option at the back is cause for optimism but perhaps the signing of another centre-back, such as Torino defender Ogbonna, is an option the Merseyside club will consider in January.
