Old Trafford side consider offer for Stamford Bridge veteran.
Manchester United should not be ruled out as a potential destination for Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole, according to ESPN sources.
Cole, 31, will be available on a free transfer at the end of the 2012-13 season as he has yet to agree an extension to his current contract at Chelsea.
A number of sides are thought to be monitoring the England international’s future, with affluent French club Paris Saint Germain, where ex-Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti is now in charge, said to be keen.
ESPN understands, though, that Cole is hopeful of prolonging his stay at Stamford Bridge, if the club offer him a deal of longer than one year.
Ashley Cole has been in the media spotlight more so than usual of late, mainly in relation to his Twitter twat tirade, but if he were to complete a hugely contentious move from Chelsea to Man United you can guarantee that too would start a far bigger backlash.
However it’s a move that Blues fans couldn’t blame the 31 year old for considering. If indeed Chelsea are to stick to their policy of only offering players of 30 years of age year long rolling deals then clearly some high-profile players are going to consider moves to sides who can better guarantee their long term footballing futures.
Though Sir Alex Ferguson brought in Alexander Buttner to offer an alternative to the seemingly off form Patrice Evra, it’s clear that Ashley Cole would offer a higher quality option should the Man United boss elect to replace the French international left-back.
Cole is arguably the best full-back in the Premier League and is still very fit and able to continue for a number of seasons so could feel a one year deal beneath him. This may spark a rush to sign the former Arsenal man.
Chelsea will have no qualms about allowing the player to leave at the end of his contract on a free transfer, they did after all allow Didier Drogba to do just that this summer. Roberto Di Matteo may feel he already has a long term replacement for the England international in the form of ever improving youngster Ryan Bertrand.
