Anfield side interested in Montpellier captain.
Italian source CalcioMercato claim that Liverpool are interested in Montpellier captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who is in the final year of his contract at the Ligue 1 champions.
Having helped his side to a maiden domestic title last term it seems that boss Rene Girard may struggle to keep together the nucleus of his Montpellier side but having seen Olivier Giroud leave for Arsenal and playmaker Younes Belhanda strongly linked to make a Premier League move, one imagines it may prove tough to persuade 23 year old skipper Yanga-Mbiwa to put pen to paper on a new deal.
A similar fate befell Lille after they won the title, that success led to the loss of a host of top talents including Eden Hazard, Gervinho, Yohan Cabaye and Moussa Sow. Montpellier haven’t started the defence of their title all that well and that will merely heighten the chances of their captain’s departure.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers may well feel the chance to bring in a player of Yanga-Mbiwa’s quality ‘on the cheap’ in January as too good to pass up.
The Anfield manager could well do with defensive reinforcements given Daniel Agger’s persistent injury concerns and Jamie Carragher’s age.
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa has racked up almost 200 top tier appearances and is now a regular in Didier Deschamps French national team set-up. The adaptable defender can play at centre-back as well as on either flank of the defence.
