German source claim that Roma are interested in signing Arsenal back-up defender Johan Djourou. They claim that Stadio Olimpico boss Zdenek Zeman will look to land the Swiss international to help add strength in depth in his side’s defence.

Though hard working and adaptable, to a degree, 25 year old man mountain Djourou is seemingly not a player who Arsene Wenger values beyond the occasional use if an injury crisis deems it necessary. The Ivory Coast born defender is a no nonsense customer who puts in a hefty shift but has is arguably not a player who should not be part of the starting eleven of a side looking to challenge for major honours.

Roma have started the season well enough but have been shipping in goals in alarming fashion, conceding 11 goals in seven Serie A matches, but one has to wonder why Zeman would expect Djourou to significantly assist matters.

Djourou moved to Arsenal as a 15 year old and is in his ninth season as part of the first team set-up but now must consider his long term prospects and may well therefore decide the time is right for a new challenge and a move to Italy may tempt the Gunners defender.
