Arsenal have entered the race for Tottenham target Leandro Damiao, as boss Arsenal Wenger steps up his pursuit of a new centre-forward.

The Brazilian has been tracked by Spurs for the best part of two years but the Londoners saw a £18m offer rejected this summer by their strategic partners Internacional.

Man City were also thought to be monitoring Damiao’s progress and were left impressed by the 23-year-old at this summer’s Olympics, where he finished top scorer with six goals as Brazil claimed the Silver.

But Arsenal have now emerged as serious contenders for Damiao in January and are reportedly ready to offer Inter £20m to secure his signature.

The Gunners did not replace last season’s top scorer Robin van Persie when he left for Man United during the summer, while new boy Olivier Giroud has struggled to find the net in his first two months in the Premier League.

Boss Arsene Wenger is a big admirer of Damiao, who is likely to lead the line for Brazil at the 2014 World Cup, and believes he will suit the Gunners style of play.

If Arsenal can land the coveted forward in January, it will be a huge blow to Spurs who still hope a deal can be agreed with Inter.

Spurs have first refusal on all Inter’s academy products but because Damiao joined the Porto Alegre club from Atletico Ibirama in 2009, this does not apply to the striker.
