Chelsea are reportedly readying a January bid for Newcastle United striker Demba Ba as Roberto Di Matteo looks to beef up his attacking options.

The Senegal international has been in great form in recent weeks and is the Premier League’s top scorer but Magpies boss Alan Pardew publicly confirmed that the former West Ham man is still very much available for fees of £7.5m that would trigger the striker’s release clause.

Ba is said to be unhappy with the wide attacking role that he has been instructed to fill since the arrival of fellow countryman Papiss Cisse and this led to the prolific forward being named on the bench for the club’s trip to Everton earlier in the campaign.

Roman Abramovich is ready to fork out large sums to help improve the striking options available to Di Matteo as he looks to help his Chelsea side to follow up last term’s Champions League success with a genuine Premier League title push, having finished last season in a disappointing sixth spot.

There has been much talk of a possible big money move for Atletico Madrid forward Radamel Falcao but Di Matteo is said to prefer a move for a player with a proven Premier League strike record and to that end has earmarked a January swoop for the Newcastle United man.

Last term the 27 year old scored 16 goals in 32 Premier League starts and has upped his record this term to six goals in seven appearances and may well be tempted by interest shown by the European champions.

Chelsea are currently relying heavily on Fernando Torres to continue his run of decent form as the only other recognised senior striker currently available to Roberto Di Matteo is Daniel Sturridge, a player the Italian doesn’t appear to have a great deal of faith in.
