Man United & Chelsea Fight for Young Italian Defender

Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge sides keen on Genoa teenager.

Italian source Corrieremercantile today report that Man United and Chelsea are vying for young Italian defender Mario Sampirisi.

The Genoa youngster has shown great maturity this term, forcing his way into the Serie A side’s first team picture this term and impressing many in the process. The 19 year old has now been called up to the Italian Under 21 national team set-up and appears to have a very bright future.

The former AC Milan youth team player could well be of use to both Premier League sides but Man United’s need may be more urgent than Chelsea’s.

Sir Alex Ferguson has seen his defence decimated by injury and average form with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Nemanja Vidic all out injured. Rio Ferdinand hasn’t been at his best and Jonny Evans has been guilty of occasional errors.

Chelsea on the other hand have solid central defensive options in John Terry, David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic so are perhaps not in urgent need of another signing in this department but the West London side have adopted a more youthful transfer approach that could well explain their interest in the up and coming defender.
