Liverpool face a battle with AC Milan as they look to clinch the signing of Danish star Christian Eriksen.

Eriksen has been one of the star performers for Ajax over the past few years and has been attracting interest from a number of top European clubs.

The Denmark international impressed once again as he netted the third goal to help his side record a 3-1 win over Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, looking to strengthen his squad in January, hopes Eriksen can be one of his big arrivals at Anfield.

Christian Eriksen did move to dampen speculation about a possible Ajax exit in recent weeks but has clearly not successfully extinguished such talk occurring in the media. It’s no surprise that both Liverpool and AC Milan, and perhaps a host of others, would be interested in the Danish international as he is truly one of the hottest prospects in European football at present.

Eriksen has helped guide his side to back to back Eredivisie titles and has shown a great deal of maturity for both club and country that has not gone unnoticed. Amsterdam Arena boss Frank de Boer will fight tooth and nail to keep the former Odense youth team player but will no that it’s likely that he will lose the talented attacking midfielder sooner rather than later.

Brendan Rodgers ethos, much in keeping with that of Liverpool’s American owners, is to plan for the future by predominantly directing their transfer policy towards the snapping up of young talent that can help drive the side upwards towards the top four and who also have a high sell on value, Ajax midfielder Eriksen certainly fits the bill on both counts.

Rodgers may well see Eriksen as an ideal man to replace veteran Steven Gerrard who at 32 is clearly in the latter stages of his Liverpool career.

AC Milan are experiencing a horrific start to their Serie A campaign, not helped by the fact that owner Silvio Berlusconi is trying to cut costs and happily sold star pair Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva. Therefore it seems unlikely that the San Siro side would be looking to spend large sums to land the Ajax youngster.
