Fulham manager Martin Jol has admitted that Brede Hangeland’s future at the club remains uncertain as talks over a new deal continue.

The Cottagers parted with Clint Dempsey and Mousa Dembele in the last transfer window, although Jol managed to soften the blows by bringing in Dimitar Berbatov, Sascha Riether, Mladen Petricand Hugo Rodallega.

Jol denied speculation that a number of his star players will leave in January, but he conceded that he could be forced to listen to offers for Hangeland.

Man United are something of a defensive shambles as present and Sir Alex Ferguson has recently been linked with interest in big Fulham centre back Brede Hangeland and the Scot will be buoyed by the news that the Craven Cottage side may have to consider offers for the contract rebel in January.

31 year old American born Norwegian international Hangeland is one of the most solid defenders in the Premier League and a player Martin Jol would be loathed to lose. However Fulham have lost a number of their star-turns over the past 18 months and they may indeed have to consider any offer for the 6ft 6in centre-back over the possibility of losing the former FC Copehagen veteran on a free transfer in the summer.

Ferguson has seen his Man United defence lurch from poor defensive display to the next as injuries to Nemanja Vidic, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have left the Old Trafford side having to on occasion turn to Michael Carrick to act as a makeshift replacement.

Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand have both hit periods of very average form and the chance to strengthen the Man United defence ‘on the cheap’ may well appeal to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Hangeland is into his sixth season at Fulham and has amassed a total of 213 appearances for the West London side.
