EXCLUSIVE: Fergie lines dramatic swoop for Cole as United boss attempts to exploit Chelsea’s contract conundrum

Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to make a shock move and take Ashley Cole on a free transfer.

The Manchester United manager wants Cole at Old Trafford and is planning to take advantage as European champions Chelsea stall over a new deal for the world’s best left back.

His interest in Cole will add another dimension to United’s trip to Stamford Bridge for Sunday’s Barclays Premier League clash.

Ferguson is a huge admirer of Cole, 31, and has reminded his coaching staff that he is one of the few players in world football to have got the upper hand on Cristiano Ronaldo.

Out of contract at the end of the season, Cole is also best friends with United striker Wayne Rooney.

And why not?

Clearly if Chelsea are unwilling to alter their contractual stance on players over the age of 30 then Sir Alex Ferguson would do well to sneak in and attempt to lure the England man to Old Trafford with the promise of an extended deal.

Arguably Patrice Evra hasn’t been his usual reliable self over the past 12 months and though impressive on his debut Alexander Buttner is perhaps not a player Man United would consider as a first choice left-back, so that could leave the door open for a move to capture the former Arsenal man.

Chelsea are clearly looking to the future and having spent upwards of £80m on six youngsters over the summer, with Eden Hazard and Oscar greatly impressing the Blues faithful, it is entirely plausible that Cole, and fellow veteran Frank Lampard, could both leave in the summer if they don’t feel a one year deal is going to cut it.

Roberto Di Matteo already has a ready made replacement for Cole in the form of Ryan Bertrand which could lessen the possible loss of perhaps one of the best full-backs in Europe.

Though a move to Man United could prove contentious Ashley Cole has clearly no qualms about making such a switch having left the Gunners to join Chelsea in very controversial circumstances in the summer of 2006.
