Newcastle United Earmark Move for Ajax Defender Niklas Moisander

St James’ Park side target Finnish international.

Italian source CalcioMercato claim that Newcastle United boss has taken an interest in Ajax centre back Niklas Moisander.

The 27 year old Finnish international has spent almost his entire professional football career in Holland and was originally released by Ajax after failing to make the grade following his move to Amsterdam in 2003, however four solid years at AZ Alkmaar earned the centre back, who can also play as a left-back, a move back to the Dutch giants.

Newcastle United may well have been impressed by the powerful defender’s performances in the Champions League and he has also helped his Ajax side to the Eredivisie season where Frank de Boer’s side are still unbeaten and looking to secure a third straight domestic title.

Pardew doesn’t have a great many options to fill the two central defensive berths in his Magpies side. Fabricio Coloccini is clearly his first choice starter and when fit Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson vie for the second spot, Moisander would be a very able competitor for the role.

One does wonder if Moisander would be willing to leave Ajax having only just forced his way back to the club this summer.
