Tottenham Step-Up Interest in Sevilla Striker Alvaro Negredo

Tottenham are keen to sign Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo in January, after reportedly failing with a bid for the Spaniard in the summer.

Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido admitted in September that an unnamed English club, believed to be Spurs, had made an eleventh hour bid for Negredo on transfer deadline day.

Negredo was part of Spain’s victorious Euro 2012 squad this summer and has attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs, including Spurs fierce rivals Arsenal.

“On the last day [of the transfer window], an English club offered Sevilla 20 millions [euros] for the striker,” said del Nido.

“First, we did not think of selling him in the market, but the player also said he wanted to stay at Sevilla. And it was not the day to make sales.”

Negredo has scored 47 league goals since joining Sevilla in 2009. Emmanuel Adebayor’s future at White Hart Lane is increasingly uncertainly, despite signing a permanent deal with the North Londoners over the summer.

The Togolese is yet to start a game under new head-coach Andre Villas-Boas and could demand a move in January, with Negredo a like-for-like replacement.

Journalist Dave Kidd of The People admits he’s heard of Tottenham’s interest in Sevilla centre forward Alvaro Negredo before: “Negredo’s one of the strikers they were looking at under Harry [Redknapp] when they were throwing a lot of money around a couple of Januarys ago,” says Dave.

“He’s the sort of striker they could probably do with, especially if [Emmanuel] Adebayor goes – and we know he doesn’t tend to stick around for too long. I haven’t heard anything personally about Negredo to Spurs this time, but he is the sort of player they might want.”
