Emirates Stadium side linked with move to capture Stamford Bridge starlet.
Chelsea and Arsenal could be on the verge of an absolutely stunning agreement: Blues goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois could move on loan to the Emirates Stadium next season.
According to Football Espana, the Blues want their promising young Belgian goalkeeper to learn his trade in England’s top flight, after two brilliant seasons with Atletico Madrid in La Liga.
Hailed as the best goalkeeper from Belgium since the legendary Michel Preud’homme, Courtois has also been widely praised as the best goalkeeper in Spain outside Iker Casillas and Victor Valdes – which is no mean feat given that he is just 20 years of age.
However, current Chelsea custodian Petr Cech shows no sign of being ready to give up his number one shirt, and after two years of regular first team football, Courtois is unlikely to want to sit on the bench at Stamford Bridge.
It is these factors that have led Chelsea to want to send Courtois on loan in England, and ideally to a London club so that they can keep a close eye on him.
Arsene Wenger has shown a huge amount of faith in Wojciech Szczesny, but repeated clangers from almost every goalkeeper to played at Arsenal since David Seaman have become the norm.
Whilst it’s undoubtedly true that Chelsea are looking to bring promising young Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois back to the Premier League as he continues to hone his trade, would the West London club really be open to sending the custodian to rivals Arsenal on a loan deal?
20 year old Courtois has an outstanding first season on loan at Atletico Madrid last term, putting in a raft of consistent displays, keeping 23 clean sheets and helping his Vicente Calderon side to a Europa League title. Chelsea elected to send the giant 6ft 6in keeper back to the La Liga side for another season and once again he has impressed as Diego Simeone’s start the season like a rocket.
Arsenal have indeed had a few problems with their compliment of keepers in recent months but a move to bring in Courtois would still be a massive surprise.
Wojciech Szczesny made a big error against Southampton and has been out injured since. Vito Mannone looked fairly solid for a couple of games but still looks uncertain and has been linked with a return to Italy. Lukasz Fabianski is also sidelined and Argentine Damian Martinez looked less than comfortable as he shipped in five away at Reading earlier in the week.
