Anfield side look to complete deal to sign teenage striker.
Liverpool ‘set to sign Helsinki striker Joel Pohjanpalo’
Liverpool are finally set to complete a deal for Finland goal machine Joel Pohjanpalo, almost nine months after he turned down a move to the Anfield club.
The 18-year-old Helsinki striker, who shot to fame with 33 goals in 23 matches for the club’s reserve team last season, has already found the net 19 times at senior level, and a host of leading clubs have expressed an interest in his signature.
The Reds offered boyhood fan Pohjanpalo a place in the club’s youth team, but he turned down the switch, believing he could develop faster by remaining in the Helsinki first team.
However, Liverpool have not taken no for an answer, and are now working on an improved contract offer for the player, with talks believed to be at an advanced stage.
Joel Pohjanpalo’s decision to turn down the offer of a move to Anfield would have been fairly surprising to the Merseyside club and now the Finn is looking to re-ignite the club’s interest in his services. It does seem odd that the Finnish Under 21 international would decide to not agree to a Liverpool move, even if such a deal would have initially meant forcing his way through the club’s reserve team to earn his chance in the first team.
The Northern Irish boss only has Luis Suarez and Fabio Borini to call upon in terms of recognised senior strikers and the Italian is out for a long spell with a broken foot. Youngster Adam Morgan is no doubt chomping at the bit to get his chance to impress in much the same way Raheem Sterling and Suso have swum magnificently after being thrown in at the deep end.
Pohjanpalo netted 19 goals in all competitions last term and may well look to emulate fellow Finns Jari Litmanen and Sami Hyypia who both represented the Merseyside club in the recent past.
This source claims that Liverpool will pay around £1m to HJK Helsinki for the youngster.
