The bitter rivalry between Arsenal and Barcelona took another twist, with the news that the Catalans have beaten the Gunners to 14-year-old wonderkid Giancarlo Poveda.

The clubs have exchange numerous blows in the past decade, with Arsenal poaching some of Barca’s finest young players from the La Masia academy including, most famously, Cesc Fabregas and, more recently, Jon Toral and Hector Bellerín – much to the fury of officials in Catalonia.

Barca have freuqently sniped that Arsenal ‘buy’ their players, while they ‘make’ theirs but the Catalans have bought a number of stars from North London in recent seasons, including Thierry Henry, Alexander Hleb and Alex Song.

Poveda is hardly the most highly profile victory for Barca, but nonetheless it will surely give the Spaniards pleasure to know that they have denied Arsenal another potentially world class player, particularly after the youngster spent a number of weeks training with the Emirates Stadium club.

Cruelly, Barca fans will now be hoping that both Toral and Bellerin amount to nothing, while Arsenal loyalist would hate to see Poveda become the latest superstar to emerge from La Masia in a few years time. On such decisions as the youngster’s, future titles and won and lost.
