Arsenal ‘could sign Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff in January’
Arsenal are reportedly preparing a January bid for Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff after having failed to land him last year.

The France international is thought to be a long-term target of Arsene Wenger’s with the Gunners boss having reportedly tracked the attacking midfielder over the past two years.

Wenger had previously said signing Gourcuff ‘is always tempting for a coach’ and now it seems his club Lyon are ready to let him go.
‘We’re planning to sell two or three players for a total of €30million,’ Aulas said.

‘If he (Gourcuff) returns to the highest level and he wants to go, then there could be a transfer,’ he added.
Arsenal could face competition to sign the player from Italian Serie A giants AC Milan.

Arsenal could well do with some added creativity as currently though the North London side certainly lack effective striking options they are also not getting all that much service from their raft of attacking midfielders, Santi Cazorla being the only consistent exception.

Lyon must be in serious financial hardship as the Stade Gerland side made a decent sum from the sales of Hugo Lloris, Aly Cissokho and Kim Källström to Tottenham, Valencia and Spartak Moscow respectively.

Though French midfielder Gourcuff is perhaps not the same player he once was, his career blighted by injury and poor patches of form, at 26 years of age the former Bordeaux man still has a lot to offer and the temptation to pick up a long term target for a reduced price may be too much for Wenger to resist.

One issue with such a move could be the fact that Arsenal do possess a number of players of a similar style to the attacking midfielder, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky to name two and arguably Jack Wilshere performs in the same type of role, however given the injuries this very trio have suffered over the past 18 months perhaps it’s still worth making a move for the one time AC Milan man.
