Alonso could be set for Premier League return.Check-in to Chelsea v Liverpool
Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso could be eyeing a return to the Premier League after a contract stand-off with Real Madrid.
Spain international Alonso, 30, has a contract until 2014 but Real Madrid are unlikely to start negotiations until next summer.
But Alonso is now weighing up other options as Real Madrid keep him waiting and his advisers are exploring a potential return to England.
Real Madrid are trying the same tactic with a few big names – also including Angel Di Maria, Arbeloa and Raul Albiol – and it may end up resulting in Alonso leaving the Spanish giants.

So, Xabi Alonso could be set for a return to the Premier League but where could the Spaniard end up?
It’s well documented that the 30-year-old playmaker, who spent 5 years at Liverpool, still holds a place in his heart for the Anfield faithful and reportedly persuaded teammate Nuri Sahin to reject Arsenal and join the Reds over the summer.
But its tough to see cash-strapped Liverpool being able to afford to re-sign the pass-master, particularly when a striker remains a priority for the red half of Merseyside.
It’s also hard to see Alonso agreeing to a return to Liverpool while the club flounder in the bottom half of the Premier League, showing no signs of making a realistic challenge for the top four.
Alonso, who was an influential part of Spain’s World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 winning squads, will have no shortage of offers and, assuming he does not fancy Man United out of respect for Liverpool, then Chelsea, Man City or Arsenal would all surely welcome him with open arms.
Alonso would fit in particularly well at Stamford Bridge and its scary to think of how good the Blues would be with the pass-master sitting behind the likes of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar.
At the Emirates too, he would complement Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla perfectly.
