Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has reportedly sent scouts to monitor three up and coming talents plying their trade in the Championship as he look to strengthen his Anfield squad in a cost effective manner.

Rodgers has been promised a decent level of funding to improve his squad in January but will not be bankrolled in the way his predecessor Kenny Dalglish was backed as Liverpool’s American owners continue to exercise restraint in the transfer market having seen the best part of £120m invested in the club’s squad during the Scot’s reign, only to see the Merseyside outfit move further away from their goal of a top four finish.

With this in mind the Northern Irish boss has identified three Championship talents he could be ready to make moves for, players he feels have the potential to make a mark in the top tier, and perhaps more importantly players who fit the club’s youthful transfer policy.

High up on the Anfield radar is Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, the England Under 21 international who has been strongly linked with interest from a number of Premier League sides and a player who could well be tempted by a move to the top tier after three seasons as a regular at Selhurst Park.

New Eagles boss Ian Holloway has his work cut out trying to keep the powerful attacker but any move for the youngster may be headed off by the good form shown by the table-topping South London side.

Rodgers is believed to have had scouts viewing the Ivory Coast born starlet’s performance at last night’s 5-0 thumping of Ipswich Town. Though Liverpool have seen the likes of Suso and Raheem Sterling excel in wide roles it is thought that the Liverpool boss is interested in the abilities Zaha possesses in a striking role, an area he could well do with strengthening.

The Liverpool boss is also considering the possibility of bringing Blackpool playmaker Tom Ince back to the club after being impressed by the form shown by the youngster over the past year.

Son of former England midfielder Paul Ince, Tom spent three years at Liverpool before opting to move to Bloomfield Road after failing to break into the club’s first team set-up. The 20 year old hasn’t looked back and his form has led to a call-up to the England Under 21 side as well as a great deal of speculation about a return to the Premier League.

Rodgers had targeted Ince when he was in charge at Swansea City and may well opt to make a move to bring the Stockport born attacker back to Liverpool.

The Liverpool boss is also scouting Burnley striker Charlie Austin, who’s goal-scoring exploits this term have attracted a great deal of attention.

The 23 year old former Swindon Town man has scored an astonishing 17 goals in 14 Championship appearances this season and the in-form forward is now on Rodgers’ radar.

Brendan Rodgers has just one fit recognised senior striker, Luis Suarez, with Fabio Borini out with a broken foot and the search is on for realistic targets to help back-up the Uruguayan and though Austin’s goals have come in the second tier of English football the Hungerford born marksman’s form has been such that the Liverpool manager feels he deserves his attention and will continue to monitor his progress with a view to a potential bid for the Clarets hot-shot.
