Old Trafford side continue to chase Colombian youngster.
Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of James Rodriguez but been stunned by a massive hike in his asking price.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been on the trail of Rodriguez for months and despatched a scout to watch him in Porto’s latest Portuguese League game against Maritimo at the Estadio do Dragao on Friday night.
When United last enquired about Rodriguez’s cost, they were told they would have to pay £24million to buy him out of his contract. In a readjustment that surely places the goalscoring winger beyond their reach, the release clause now stands at £36million.
United have a ready-made bargaining tool in unsettled Portugal winger Nani, who could be used in a part-exchange package.

21 year old Colombian James Rodriguez has been a huge success since his move to FC Porto from Argentine side Banfield and Sir Alex Ferguson will have been dismayed to hear the youngster’s asking price increase so drastically so moves to use Portuguese winger Nani as part of any deal to land the goal-scoring winger may be a wise way to get a deal completed.
Rodriguez is into his third season at the Estadio Dragao and has helped FC Porto to two domestic titles and a Europa League triumph during that period, netting 24 goals in 72 appearances in the process.
Nani is seemingly a player Sir Alex Ferguson is willing to offload to help secure Rodriguez and perhaps the former Sporting Lisbon man would be interested in a move back to Portugal where he could re-ignite a career that has stuttered at Old Trafford.
Nani has stated just four of Man United’s ten Premier League fixtures this term and with the likes of Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Luis Antonio Valencia on hand to fill wide-roles Ferguson can afford to use the 25 year old as a bargaining chip to land the FC Porto starlet.
