Athletic Bilbao have opened contract talks with Fernando Amorebieta although they remain apart in their proposals for a new deal.

Liverpool want to sign the defender and are keen on making a move in January, when his price-tag will be at its lowest.
The 27-year-old’s contract expires on June 30 next year and he would be able to leave at a knock-down fee in January.

As well as displaying a renewed interest in this Athletic Bilbao contract rebel the Anfield side are also keen on landing another, in the form of giant Spanish international forward Fernando Llorente who is also on Brendan Rodgers’ wish-list.

This may well prove a very sensible use of Liverpool’s resources and Brendan Rodgers could well do with strengthening his squad as they look to continue to correct their path up the table after a poor start to the Premier League campaign.

Both players have served Athletic Bilbao for lengthy periods and having seen team-mate Javi Martinez leave for Bayern Munich they may feel the time is right to make similar departures.

Venezuelan international Fernando Amorebieta has been at the San Mames for seven years and is the club’s first choice centre-back and is a very able performer who could offer Rodgers an alternative option and one that the Liverpool boss may well need given Jamie Carragher’s age and Daniel Agger’s constant injury concerns.

Fernando Llorente could well act as an ideal foil for Luis Suarez up front, the type of player Rodgers could dearly do with in order to help shoulder the burden that rests squarely with the Uruguayan. However Juventus are also keen on the Spanish international and as such Liverpool could struggle to lure the giant forward to Anfield, a task that could prove all the more tricky if they do not have the prospect of Champions League football to offer the 27 year old.
