Arsene Wenger is scouting Ajax forward Siem de Jong with a view to a potential January bid for the Swiss born Dutch international.

The Gunners boss is looking to strengthen his Arsenal attack and has been monitoring the performances of the 23 year old, who finished as Ajax’s top goal-scorer last term and has already netted seven goals during the current campaign including three goals against Man City in the two encounters against the Premier League title holders in Champions League action.

De Jong moved to Ajax’s academy at the age of 16 from De Graafschap and is now in his sixth season in the Amsterdam side’s first team. His efforts over the past two seasons, scoring a total of 33 goals, have helped the club to back to back domestic titles and the forward may feel tempted by a possible move to the Premier League.

Wenger has seen summer signing Olivier Giroud begin to settle in to life in the English top tier after a shaky start but the Arsenal boss is still low on options up front as he has opted to play the likes of Lukas Podolski, Gervinho and in-form Theo Walcott primarily in wide roles.

De Jong can also play in a withdrawn role behind a target man and as such has the type of adaptability that appeals to Wenger and this has led to the Ajax man being on the Arsenal boss’s radar as he looks to bring in further options to boost a somewhat threadbare front-line.

Wenger sold Robin Van Persie and Carlos Vela to Man United and Real Sociedad respectively and then further diminished his attacking options by opting to loan out Nicklas Bendtner, Park Chu-Young and youngster Joel Campbell to Juventus, Celta Vigo and Real Betis and is now beginning to feel the paucity of options in this role still available in his first team squad.
