Roberto Di Matteo admitted any manager would love to have Radamel Falcao in his team as Chelsea step up their interest in the Colombia and Atletico Madrid striker.

Roman Abramovich is ready to concede his £50million gamble on Fernando Torres has failed and the Blues owner will make funds available for Di Matteo.

Manchester City and Real Madrid are also interested in the 26-year-old forward, who scored a stunning hat-trick against Chelsea in the European Super Cup.

Di Matteo said: ‘Falcao is one of the best strikers, probably, in European and world football. His ratio of goals per game is quite impressive not just this season but over the last three years, at Porto and Atletico Madrid. If you ask any manager, he’d have him in his team.

‘I know the window’s nearing and there’ll be a lot of speculation for our club, but whatever we do we’ll keep it behind closed doors.’

For the first time, Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo has admitted that he would love to have Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao at Stamford Bridge.

The Colombian is rumoured to be the Blues’ top target for January, with reports suggesting the Blues are set to beat Real Madrid and Man City to the signature of the £48m striker.

It is understood that Blues owner Roman Abramovic has finally lost patience with £50m striker Fernando Torres, who has looked shadow of his former self since joining from Liverpool in January 2011. The Spaniard has struggled for goals and only won Chelsea Premier League 2 points during his entire spell in West London, a staggering statistic which makes a mockery of his extortionate price-tag.

Falcao is the most coveted in Europe at present but with Barcelona not showing an interest and Real boss Jose Mourinho describing the 26-year-old as ‘forbidden fruit’, the way is paved for Chelsea to swoop.

With Falcao leading the line and Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Oscar operating in attacking midfield, Chelsea would undoubtedly boast one of the most potential attacking teams in Europe.
